The founder Teisuke AKAMATSU, a graduate of the University of Tokyo, Department of Law, was admitted to the Tokyo Bar Association (Tokyo Bengosikai) in 1959 and after a few years of law practice in Tokyo obtained the Asia Foundation Scholarship to Stanford Law School 1961-1962 and then joined the faculty of the University of Washington Law School 1962-1964. Later he founded the Akamatsu International Law Office (Akamatsu Kokusai Houritsu Jimusho) which is listed in the Attorneys Directory (Bengoshi Meibo) published by the Japan Federation of Bar Associations.
Currently the office consists of a small number of highly experienced lawyers. It provides extensive and expert services in numerous fields of Japanese law, ranging from advice on corporate management, business negotiations, anti-trust and labor affairs, to representation in various types of litigation, particularly in torts and contractual violations.
It also organizes, as leader or coordinator a larger group of trial practitioners, as we did in the last 30 years representing international pharmaceutical corporations in so-called side-effect (product liability) affairs against some 7,000 patients.
Some of us have experience with professorship at private international universities in Tokyo and the Legal Research and Training Institute of the Supreme Court of Japan (Shiho Kenshujo).
In general, our consultation fee is ten thousand Japanese yen (\10,000), subject to appointment by telephone, fax or e-mail. In case of litigation we also accept to work on a percentage basis, mostly in accordance with the fee standards of the Tokyo Bar Association (Tokyo Bengoshikai) (starting fee 3% and up and success fee 3% and up of the amount of claim) depending upon size, amount and nature of the case. Hourly fee or contingent basis alone can also be considered. Normally a deposit is required in such contingent case. |
